The Five Borough Institute is encouraging those of you in our network to put forward your vision of how Manhattan should be rebuilt, as an alternative to the plans of the city’s financial institutions.  We need to support the creation of a community in lower Manhattan that promotes social justice and cohesion.
 
In the short run, we need to make working families whole who have been hurt by losses of work and income. This must include public funds to put people back to work meeting the wide range of unmet needs in the city.  In the longer run, the dominant financial interests will push for an even bigger center for global finance. Wall Street has, in the past decades, played too large a role in the city’s economy, monopolizing the fruits of the economic boom and distorting the city’s economy. The working class needs an alternative that makes sense for the social, as well as financial, health of the capital of the global economy.
