Reconstructing New York City

“For over six months, a broad based Labor Community Advocacy Network, convened and coordinated by the the Fiscal Policy Institute and the New York City Central Labor Council of the AFL-CIO, has been meeting regularly to hammer out a thoughtful and detailed program for the reconstruction of New York City in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks.  On April 24, the Network released its initial policy statement on the rebuilding of New York City.”

The Importance of Full Employment

Both pundits and important policy-making organizations such as the Congressional Budget Office “...have tended to view the recent rise in unemployment as a ‘return’ to a normal, sustainable rate. The cost of taking this misguided notion seriously is high, and it is a cost that falls disproportionately on the working class.” The Economic Policy Institute addresses this issue in this thoughtful and informative Working Paper by Jared Bernstein and Dean Baker; Full Employment: Don’t Give It Up Without a Fight.

Income Trends Nationwide and Statewide

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) and the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) have issued a new report, Pulling Apart:A State-by-State Analysis of Income Trends, which examines the changes in the average incomes of families of different parts of the ecomic spectrum in each state. Findings include the fact that New York has the most unequal income distribution of all 50 states, a situation which has worsened over the past 20 years. Working with the CBPP and EPI, the Fiscal Policy Institute has issued a companion report, Pulling Apart in New York, which presents further analysis of the data on New York State.
